Sebastião Salgado was born in Brazil and began his career as a professional photographer in Paris in 1973, working with photo agencies such as Magnum Photos. In 1994, he and Lélia Wanick Salgado formed Amazonas Images. He has travelled in over 100 countries for his photographic projects. He is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, an honorary member of the Academy of Arts, a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts of l’Institut de France, and a Chevalier (Knight) de la Légion d’Honneur, France. Lélia and Sebastião have worked since the 1990s on the restoration of a section of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. In 1998 they succeeded in turning this land into a nature reserve and created the Instituto Terra. Salgado lives in Paris.
